John Amann


John Amann is the newly appointed principal of Cristo Rey San Diego High School, effective July 1st, 2024. He brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as principal of St. Columba Catholic School, where he significantly increased enrollment by 40%, facilitated over $1.5 million in facility improvements, and improved standardized test scores by nearly 20% during his six-year tenure. Under his leadership, St. Columba received the Innovative School Award in 2022 and the Inclusive School Award in 2024 from the Diocese of San Diego.


Mr. Amann is known for his data-informed approach, action-oriented mindset, and student-centered initiatives. His emphasis on data-driven outcomes and collaborative growth has made him a standout leader in education. Before his tenure at St. Columba, he held various educational leadership positions, consistently demonstrating excellence in creating student-centered cultures and improving school performance. His ability to implement innovative changes, such as a fully departmentalized structure at St. Columba, highlights his commitment to educational excellence.


Mr. Amann is married to Marisa, also a principal in the Diocese of San Diego, and they have three children: Siena, Kolbe, and Jonah. Outside of his professional achievements, he is an avid sports fan, cheering for the Dodgers, Lakers, and Chargers. Mr. Amann is deeply committed to upholding the Catholic values central to Cristo Rey San Diego’s mission and looks forward to contributing to the school’s ambitious goals and strategic vision.
