San Diego, CA, August 19, 2018– The Feasibility Study Committee of Cristo Rey San Diego High School announce The Congregation of Jesus and Mary as sponsor of the college preparatory school that will offer families with limited means a transformative educational option. On target to serve its inaugural freshman class in fall 2020, Cristo Rey San Diego’s distinctive model will blend rigorous academics, four years of professional work experience, Catholic educational values, and support for students to and through college.

The Congregation of Jesus and Mary (commonly known as the Eudists) made their commitment official on August 19, in celebration of the Feast Day of St John Eudes. They join 38 other religious congregations that sponsor the 35 existing Cristo Rey Network schools across the country. The Eudists run two parishes in San Diego County: St Patrick’s in Carlsbad and St James/St Leo’s in Solana Beach.

“Cristo Rey schools have a track record of changing lives. Students in Southeast San Diego will be able to change the trajectory of their own lives through education and work. They’ll graduate high school with a diploma, a resume, and confidence to chase their dreams.” Says Deacon Mike Daniels, Feasibility Study Co-Chair. “ The Eudists will be a blessing to both the future students and staff of Cristo Rey San Diego.”

With permission from the local Bishop in early 2017, the Cristo Rey San Diego Feasibility Study Committee began working to bring the innovative Cristo Rey education model to San Diego. Operating with the guidance of the Cristo Rey Network national office, the Feasibility Study Committee is conducting a thorough needs assessment to ensure there is both interest from future students and support from the business and philanthropic community. 20 local companies have already committed to hire students through the Corporate Work Study Program, including Sempra Energy, CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, and The University of San Diego.

Cristo Rey San Diego High School will be the sixth Cristo Rey school in California, joining schools in Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento.
